The Varsity Band is an integral part of school life. No one can imagine a football game or a parade without the marching red and gray. The same band also performs overtures and show tunes in concert and on tour. This year's calendar of events for the eighty bandsmen included football games, a winter and spring concert, three parades, basketball games, IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest, a band clinic, and the annual spring tour.
The highlight of the 1968-69 band season was the tour to Quincy, Illinois. For two days in April, the horn tootin' Rebels traveled, enjoyed themselves, and played for their suppers across the state. In return, the Quincy Band delighted all the Rebels with an assembly at South on their own tour. To be part of the Varsity Band, a prospective member must "try out." Those who don't make it, are placed in the Junior Varsity Band. Once in the Varsity Band, all members are required to "challenge," that is, play before the director for a position in his respective section.
[See page 53 for the names. Otherwise, you can hover your mouse under the chin to see a band member's name. I need help with some of the 69_052 names .]
