Kim lived in Oakwood Estates, which to me was where
the rich people lived. She had always fascinated
me because she seemed like such an individualist and
nonconformist. I only remember speaking to her once,
if you can call it that. I passed her on the sidewalk and
said, "There's Kim Nemitz." I'm not sure if she responded.
For a comparison of how much I was in awe of Kim Nemitz,
think of the movie American Graffiti where the protagonist is
enthralled by the sight of the lady in the white thunderbird.
There is also part of me that wondered if Kim was the
same girl that I saw at LanOak Park when I was in fifth
grade. What I remember most about that girl now is that
she wore a pink swimming cap -- not a smooth cap but
one of those frilly ones. Kim was pictured on the
Foreign Languages page,
and her mug picture is on page 132.
I just realized that gal with the pink swimming cap was Irene Zonger.
As fate would have it, she was in my 8th grade homeroom
class three years later. Oddly, I have no memory of actually
talking to Irene. But perhaps I did.
